Atmosphere is a powerful tool across many mediums. Films, books and even music can portray moods, emotion and feelings, enticing audiences and effecting them. Games which have a heavy and cohesive atmosphere manage to draw the player into the world and provide them with an immersive memorable experience. I decided to study a game which I believe has a strong and engaging atmosphere, to discover what atmosphere is and how it immerses the player.
I created this simple white box level in Unreal Engine 4 to explore different game mechanics and how players think and progress through a level. Below is a play through with commentary explaining the different aspects and how they work together to lead the player forward.
